Dr. Robert Marzano’s Teacher Evaluation Model Alignment to Virginia Teaching Standards

The state of Virginia Board of Education has approved the Virginia Standards for the Professional Practice of Teachers, which will become effective July 1, 2012. The revised Document includes two sections: Standards for Professional Practice of All Teachers, and Standards of Teachers in Specific Disciplines and Specialized Areas.

Virginia's goal is to provide schools and districts with a guide to help them define and develop teachers professional practice. The resource includes reflection for self examination, as well a small sample of some important aspects of teaching, but this is only meant as a guide and not a standard check list.

Virginia's Board of Education also approved the Guidelines for Uniform Performance Standards and Evaluation Criteria for Teachers which will also go into effect July 1, 2012. This Guideline focuses on an end goal of "supporting the continuous growth and development of each teacher by monitoring, analyzing, and applying pertinent data compiled within a system of meaningful feedback." It also states that 40 percent of teachers’ evaluations are based on student achievement.

Dr. Robert Marzano's Casual Evaluation Model effectively links teacher evaluation to student achievement by identifying the cause and effect relationship between the two. This helps Districts make the most informed choices with the greatest benefit. Learning Sciences International has developed a document for Virginia that aligns Dr. Marzano’s Causal Teacher Evaluation Model to the five Major Virginia Categories of Evaluation Criteria listed below:

I. Planning and Assessment

II. Instruction

III. Safety and Learning Environment

IV. Communication and Community Relations

V. Professionalism
